WHICH MODEL?

Four VanMoofs. One is
probably right for you.

The S6 is the new flagship, the S5/A5 is the still-great-but-selling-out pick, the S3 is the classic used deal, and the S4 is the rare bird. Here's how they really compare.

Flagship
VanMoof Series 6 — the new flagship

Series 6 & S6 Open

Released June 2025 · New in box

From €3,298 (EU) / £3,098 (UK) · 3-year warranty

  • Fully back under Lavoie / VanMoof — new warranty, new service network
  • Refreshed motor, brighter matrix display, tidier cabling
  • Peak Design phone mount built into the top tube
  • Mechanical 3-gear hub (S6) or step-through frame (S6 Open)
Mostly sold out
VanMoof S5 & A5

S5 & A5

2022 generation · Proven & quiet

New stock draining · Used €1,800–€2,400

  • The "modern VanMoof" aesthetic — minimal, clean, quiet
  • A5 is the step-through version — easier to mount
  • Automatic Shifting (ASM) and Turbo Boost still best in class
  • New stock increasingly scarce as S6 replaces it
S5 / A5
Used classic
VanMoof S3 & X3 — best used value

S3 & X3

2020 generation · Best used value

Used €450–€1,100 depending on condition

  • Massive used market — easily the most available VanMoof
  • Full Moofment diagnostics via Bluetooth — read error codes before you buy
  • X3 is the small-wheel version for shorter riders
  • Watch Error 44 (e-shifter) history — the classic S3 issue
Rare bird
VanMoof S4 & X4 — rare lease-only model

S4 & X4

2021 lease-only · Collector

Rarely listed · Prices all over the map

  • Sold primarily through Dutch cycle-lease programs — never a full consumer launch
  • Shares many parts with the S3 — service is still possible
  • Most buyers skip straight from S3 to S5 — treat it as a niche pick
  • If you see one listed, verify the serial and diagnostics carefully
ONLINE vs IN-STORE

Where you buy
matters more than you think.

Both routes get you a bike. Only one gives you a legal 14-day window to change your mind. Here's the honest breakdown.

vanmoof.com

Buying online, direct

  • EU cooling off: 14 days to return after delivery (EU & UK)
  • Warranty and service straight through VanMoof / Lavoie
  • No markup, no middleman, no "out of stock" surprises
  • Must be in original packaging and ridden ≤ 25 km to test
  • You pay return shipping if you send it back
Verdict: the safer route. You try the bike, and if it's not for you, you have a legal right to return it. Most riders never use it — but it's nice to have.
Bike shop

Buying from a local shop

  • You see and touch the bike before paying
  • Often bundled with test rides, fittings, and a human you can call
  • No guaranteed change-of-mind return — shop's policy only
  • Service workflow often runs through the shop (slower)
  • Stock for newer models is hit-or-miss outside NL / DE
Verdict: great if you already love the bike and want a local contact. Not ideal if you're still deciding — ask for the return policy in writing.

FAQ

Commonly asked questions.

Answered honestly by a rider, not a chatbot.

Which VanMoof should I buy in 2026?

The Series 6 (S6 or S6 Open) is the current flagship — fresh, brand new, with a 3-year Lavoie-backed warranty and the full new service network. If you want something cheaper and still new-in-box, the S5/A5 is a great pick when available. For tight budgets, a well-maintained used S3 is still the classic entry point.

Is VanMoof still in business?

Yes — VanMoof was acquired by McLaren Applied spinoff Lavoie in 2023 and relaunched with the Series 6 in June 2025. The brand is actively selling new bikes in the Netherlands, Germany, France, UK, Belgium and more, with service and warranty back under the VanMoof name.

Does the S6 come with a warranty?

Yes. The Series 6 ships with a 3-year VanMoof/Lavoie warranty from the delivery date. EU consumers additionally benefit from a minimum 2-year legal guarantee on non-conformity — these run in parallel.

Can I return a VanMoof if I don't like it?

If you buy online from vanmoof.com within the EU or UK, you get a 14-day right of withdrawal — a legal cooling-off period. The bike must be in original packaging and ridden 25 km or less. In-store and reseller purchases have no guaranteed change-of-mind return.

S6 or S5 — which is the better buy?

The S6 is newer, backed by Lavoie's 3-year warranty, and comes with the refreshed Peak Design phone mount, improved motor and mechanical gearing. The S5/A5 is cheaper, proven, and still a fantastic ride — but stock is drying up. If you want the long-term bet, go S6.

What's the difference between S6 and S6 Open?

The S6 has a classic top-tube frame. The S6 Open is the step-through version — lower top tube, easier to mount, great for dresses, skirts, shorter riders, or anyone who just doesn't want to swing a leg over a horizontal bar. Same motor, same electronics, same warranty.

Is it safe to buy a used S3?

Yes, if you check diagnostics first. The classic S3 issue is Error 44 (e-shifter). Pair Moofment to the bike over Bluetooth, read the live diagnostics, and walk away if the errors look dodgy.

Can I use VanMoofer's link to order?

Yes — the order buttons take you straight to vanmoof.com with a tracking parameter. If you end up buying, VanMoofer earns a small affiliate commission and you pay the exact same price. It's how the site, the apps, and the guides stay free and independent.
