US Mode on VanMoof: A Step-by-Step Guide

Unlock 32 km/h on your VanMoof

Important Reminder

As confirmed by VanMoof (02.05.24), modifying the region settings using a third-party app could void your warranty. Operating an e-Bike at speeds exceeding 25km/h on public streets in Europe is illegal and can result in fines or other legal consequences.

This speed limit is in place to ensure the safety of both the rider and those sharing the road. We strongly advise against attempting to use the US mode or any other modifications that may enable your VanMoof to exceed this speed limit on public roads. Ride responsibly and within the limits set by the law.

Activate US Mode on VanMoof S6 & S6 Open

If you're a VanMoof S6 or S6 Open owner, you may be wondering whether you can activate the US mode (32 km/h). Currently, this isn’t possible — the latest firmware does not allow speed mode changes beyond EU regulations. We’ll have to wait and see whether a future firmware update will enable this option for bikes sold in the EU.

  1. Currently Unavailable

The S6 & S6 Open models are locked to regional speed limits by firmware. There is no method to enable US mode at this time.

  2. Future Updates

VanMoof 2.0 (McLaren Applied) has not confirmed whether future firmware updates will include the US mode or similar features for EU bikes.

  3. Stay Informed

Keep your bike and app updated to receive potential feature changes or regional firmware updates in the future.

Tip:

Using the Moofment App? We’re currently working on bringing S6 & S6 Open compatibility to the Moofment app. Until full integration is complete, please avoid using any third-party apps to modify speed settings, as VanMoof explicitly warns that doing so can void your warranty.

Activate US Mode on VanMoof S5 & A5

If you're a VanMoof S5 or A5 owner, you can unleash the potential of your ride by activating the US mode (32 km/h).

  1. Change iPhone Region Settings

Navigate to Settings > General > Language & Region > Region and select "United States".

  2. Connect to VPN

Connect your phone to a VPN app and set the location to the United States.

  3. Start Registration

Scan the QR code on your bike. This ensures your bike is in US mode from the start. 32 km/h unlocked!

  4. Switch Back

You can now safely switch your phone's region back to your home country and turn off the VPN while retaining the US mode on your bike.

Already registered? Remove your bike from your account via my.vanmoof.com or the VanMoof app. Click "Ownership — Remove Owner" under the bike's settings. You'll receive a QR code via email to re-register with the steps above.

Using Moofment App? If you're using the Moofment app for S5/A5 control, note that it requires the official VanMoof app running in the background. This is because Moofment uses the same certificate VanMoof issues. Since VanMoof explicitly warns that 3rd-party apps modifying speed settings can void warranties, this setup is the safer option.

Activate US Mode on VanMoof S3 & X3

If you own a VanMoof S3 or X3 and want to reach speeds of up to 32 km/h, activating the US mode is the way to go.

  1. Close the VanMoof App

Make sure the VanMoof app is completely closed on your iPhone.

  2. Change Region Settings

Navigate to Settings > General > Language & Region > Region and select "United States".

  3. Relaunch the App

Open the VanMoof app again. Voila! The US mode is now activated, allowing you to enjoy a more thrilling ride.

While there is a warning in the VanMoof app about changing your region, don't worry. This setting will remain unchanged unless you decide to reset your region settings later on.

Note: If changing region settings isn't possible on your device, you'll need to use a VPN to simulate being in a different country. With a little bit of technical know-how, you can access different regional speed configurations on your VanMoof.

Using Moofment App? For S3/X3 and S2/X2 models, the Moofment app connects directly via Bluetooth (remind to keep the official VanMoof App closed) to control your bike (speed limits, motor power, diagnostics) and extends your community reach.
