A step-by-step guide to unlocking 32 km/h on your VanMoof S3, X3, S5, A5, and S6 — with the legal and warranty warnings you need to hear first.
As confirmed by VanMoof (02.05.24), modifying the region settings using a third-party app could void your warranty. Operating an e-bike at speeds exceeding 25 km/h on public streets in Europe is illegal and can result in fines or other legal consequences.
This speed limit is in place to ensure the safety of both the rider and those sharing the road. We strongly advise against attempting to use US Mode or any other modifications that may enable your VanMoof to exceed this speed limit on public roads. Ride responsibly and within the limits set by the law.
If you're an S6 or S6 Open owner wondering whether you can activate US Mode (32 km/h) — currently, this isn't possible. The latest firmware does not allow speed mode changes beyond EU regulations. We'll have to wait and see whether a future firmware update will enable this option for bikes sold in the EU.
The S6 & S6 Open models are locked to regional speed limits by firmware. There is no method to enable US Mode at this time.
VanMoof 2.0 (McLaren Applied) has not confirmed whether future firmware updates will include US Mode or similar features for EU bikes.
Keep your bike and app updated to receive potential feature changes or regional firmware updates in the future.
Using Moofment? Moofment is now fully compatible with S6 & S6 Open. Join the ride — and stay tuned for even more features coming soon.
If you're an S5 or A5 owner, you can unleash the potential of your ride by activating US Mode (32 km/h) during registration.
Navigate to Settings > General > Language & Region > Region and select "United States".
Connect your phone to a VPN app and set the location to the United States.
Scan the QR code on your bike. This ensures your bike is in US mode from the start. 32 km/h unlocked.
You can now safely switch your phone's region back to your home country and turn off the VPN while retaining US Mode on your bike.
Already registered? Remove your bike from your account via my.vanmoof.com or the VanMoof app. Click "Ownership — Remove Owner" under the bike's settings. You'll receive a QR code via email to re-register with the steps above.
Using Moofment? For S5/A5 control, Moofment uses the same certificate VanMoof issues — so the official VanMoof app must be installed and authenticated in the background. Since VanMoof explicitly warns that third-party apps modifying speed settings can void warranties, this setup is the safer option.
If you own a VanMoof S3 or X3 and want to reach speeds of up to 32 km/h, activating US Mode is the way to go.
Make sure the VanMoof app is completely closed on your iPhone.
Navigate to Settings > General > Language & Region > Region and select "United States".
Open the VanMoof app again. Voila — US Mode is now activated, allowing you to enjoy a more thrilling ride.
While there is a warning in the VanMoof app about changing your region, don't worry — the setting remains unchanged unless you decide to reset your region settings later on.
Note: if changing region settings isn't possible on your device, you'll need to use a VPN to simulate being in a different country. A little technical know-how unlocks different regional speed configurations on your VanMoof.
Using Moofment? For S3/X3 and S2/X2 models, Moofment connects directly via Bluetooth (keep the official VanMoof app closed) to control your bike (speed limits, motor power, diagnostics) and extend your community reach.
EU law requires 25 km/h on public roads. With Moofment's CityGuard, riders can set geofenced speed zones for public areas, school zones, and custom regions — helping you stay compliant wherever you ride.
