When the VanMoof S2 landed in 2019, it felt like the future had arrived on two wheels. With its built-in tech and sleek design, it wasn't just a bike — it was an experience. Through my first-person ride videos, tech deep-dives, and hands-on insights, the goal was simple: show the world what modern urban cycling could truly feel like.

From Rider to Community Contributor

What began as personal enthusiasm quickly evolved into deeper involvement with the VanMoof community. Answering questions, spotting trends, and offering support became second nature. As newer models introduced more complexity, so did the conversations — with recurring issues, questions, and frustrations becoming common. While many struggled, consistent maintenance helped my bikes stay reliable.

Rather than focusing on the flaws, I chose to highlight what worked, how to care for the bikes and avoid common pitfalls. Surprisingly, VanMoof took notice and even sent a thank you note with chocolates :). It was a small but meaningful recognition that the community effort mattered.

Tapping Into the Tech Conversation

One major topic among riders was speed. Earlier VanMoof models included the ability to switch regions and unlock the "offroad" mode, allowing speeds up to 37 km/h — something which stood out as a selling point. But under regulatory pressure, this was eventually removed, leaving many disappointed.

Together with independent developers, I helped test, redesign and refine third-party apps that restored some of this lost functionality. I created videos, tutorials and shared solutions to help others regain control over their bikes. Feedback was clear: these resources helped many decide to join the VanMoof ecosystem.

Building a Hub: vanmoofer.com

To streamline updates, insights, and shared knowledge, I launched vanmoofer.com and its social extensions. It became a place to post tech breakdowns, community feedback, and forward-looking ideas. Some posts even reached VanMoof directly, leading to deeper discussions and prototype testing within the community.

Through the Collapse

Then came the bankruptcy. Thousands of riders were left in the dark... unfulfilled orders, broken bikes, no support. As the official communication channels went silent, the community stepped up. I did what I could to guide people, share verified updates, and keep the network of riders connected.

The Birth of the Moofment App

It became clear that the VanMoof experience needed more than support forums and scattered tools — it needed a unified platform to connect riders and bring back the sense of movement.

Inspired by that idea, I proposed a ride event feature in an article (Why VanMoof and Cowboy Should Let Riders Create Events). Community feedback was overwhelmingly positive — over 80% expressed interest.

That feedback led to the creation of the Moofment App: a space where riders could organize and join events, discover new routes, and keep the VanMoof spirit alive. Building it required months of work, investment, and hope — but early adoption was slower than expected, almost five times below initial projections. :D

Listening, Improving, Evolving

So I asked: what would make the app more useful? The answer was clear — bluetooth control. In response, I added bluetooth support for Series 3 and Series 5, giving riders the ability to adjust speed settings once again. I also lowered the price to the minimum, while keeping privacy at the core: no personal data collection, fully GDPR-compliant, and rider-controlled.

The interface has matured, too. With context and time aware design, the app now can make smart suggestions. The latest feature, MoofMatch, lets riders see who's nearby and offers an auto match feature — kinda like a radar for community rides.
